Entrepreneurial Journey of a First-Generation Immigrant: Building Hangtight
Armando Vera Carvajal, co-founder and CEO of social planning app Hangtight, shares about his life as a first-generation immigrant from Mexico. He recognizes the sacrifices his parents made in pursuit of the American dream and embraces his status as a proud member of the LGBTQ+ community. After struggling to fit in as a child due to linguistic and cultural differences, he realized in college that his natural entrepreneurial spirit could allow him to feel comfortable fitting into his own mold. He further developed his entrepreneurial skills during an experience studying abroad in Paris and Singapore. Facing initial hitches in technical talent acquisition after launching his startup, Hangtight, his fortunes changed when his company was able to acquire a competitor's tech stack, trained machine learning models and users. Armando concludes by emphasizing the importance of resilience when faced with adversity.
